The Fretless 2019 Tour The Fretless Multi-Juno award-winning Canadian supergroup The Fretless (2017 Instrumental Album of The Year) also picked up two nominations in the Canadian Folk Music Awards (Best Contemporary Album and Instrumental Group of The Year). The accolade was great news for a band that continues to grow in stature around the world, seen by many as one of the most powerfully charged forces on the roots music circuit. Previously, they had gathered in some similarly impressive honours on their home turf but it took the release of the Bird’s Nest album to win them the attention they deserved on this side of the Atlantic. Consistently given four and five-star ratings, Songlines magazine loved its “plethora of thrilling moments” while fRoots magazine placed them “in the elite category.” RNR magazine said it was “high quality, inventive and absolutely full of life and energy.” They rocked Celtic Connections with stunning shows in 2018 and emerged triumphant from Shetland Folk festival too, after releasing the superb Live From The Art Farm album. ABOUT THE PERFORMER The Fretless take string music to fascinating places, transforming fiddle tunes and folk melodies through intricate, beautiful, high-energy arrangements and breathtaking performances. In 2014, following the release of their self-titled second album, they carried off a Western Canadian Music Award for Instrumental Album of the Year and the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year. That followed similar success two years earlier when their debut album, Waterbound grabbed the attention of critics & fans across many genres, and also won Instrumental Album of the Year at the WCMAs and two CFMAs for Ensemble and Instrumental Group of the Year. In 2016, they issued another stunning recording focused on original music with a few traditional tunes too, to follow the trajectory set from their first two releases as they continue to expand the rhythmic, harmonic and structured style of the many folk genres they play using only string instruments. These musicians have come from very different traditional and contemporary backgrounds, and are fully formed from a vast array of influences.
