Orpheus Flanagan Collective Orpheus is a hymn to love wrapped in a beautiful, magical, heart-pounding piece of high-stakes theatre.’ YORK PRESS Created by Alexander Wright (The Flanagan Collective) and Phil Grainger (Gobbledigook),ORPHEUS is an internationally award winning show wound together from hair raising spoken word and soaring soul music. It’s a modern retelling of the ancient myth, transporting us through dive bars, back streets and late night karaoke. It’s a show about falling in love, about seismic shifts in your everyday life, and about how far we’d want to go to save those we hold so near and dear. It’s a 5,000 year old story, but told for us, here, now. Performed by a storytelling and a musician, the tale is wound together from a guitar and a book, and the audience. We created ORPHEUS to play anywhere and everywhere. The show premiered in the garden of a dutch cheese shop in Cromarty. Since then it’s played in houses, pubs, halls, shops, tunnels, libraries, foyers, bars, empty lofts and - very occasionally - a theatre. ORPHEUS won Best Theatre (weekly) award at the Adelaide Fringe and the Summerhall Award at VAULT Festival.. Told through a fusion of hair raising spoken word and original, live, soulful music, ORPHEUS sits in between spoken word poetry, an acoustic gig and a theatre show. Split in to two 40 min halves, it is designed to be performed in social spaces; the village hall; the back room of a pub; as part of a gig night; in a more traditional theatre context; or at festivals. We want to bring the show to where people are, to tell a great story and play some great music. We are looking to tour to theatres, social spaces, community spaces, unusual spaces, special places. We looking to talk with programmers, festivals, rural touring networks, people who book theatre all the time and people who have never book a show in their lives. If you want us to come to you, we want to chat. The show is incredible flexible - it’s two performers, a book and a guitar. We usually perform loosely in traverse. If there’s a good, usual or unusual way for us to bring the show to you, then let us know - more than likely we’d be up for it. We’ll be around the UK and with some international dates too. ABOUT THE PERFORMER We're a rolling strolling bunch of rag tag folk. We make theatre, music, festivals and other bits and pieces in between. We're as likely to be found in the back of a country pub as a fancy theatre. We are always up for a chat.
